Column is a vertical member whose horizontal dimensions measured at right angles to the thickness does not exceed three times its thickness. 2. (in concrete masonry) a compression member, vertical or nearly vertical, the width of which does not exceed four times its thickness and the height of which exceeds four times its least lateral dimension.
