A Fluorescent Lamp is a lamp in which electric discharge of ultraviolet energy excites a fluorescing coating (phosphor) and transforms some of the energy to visible light.
A fluorescent lamp converts electrical power into useful light more efficiently than an incandescent lamp. The lower energy cost typically offsets the higher cost of the lamp. The lamp fixture is more costly because it requires a ballast to regulate the current that is used to power the lamp.
